One startling problem I see the media is having is that they are not doing a good job of explaining the importance of staying WELL hydrated. Water alone cannot replenish what you have lost during heavy work and or athletic activity. Electrolytes are not all that common in water, and they are essential to nerve cell functioning. For those who don't know the importance of nerve cells, they are basically the information carriers of the body that connect the brain with the rest of the body. Without nerves, the human body could not function and electrolytes are important in allowing nerve cells to communicate with one another. Nerve cells use both chemical and electrical signaling and without good signaling they have trouble keeping the body working well. So if you are exercising regularly like me or find yourself sweating a lot, drink plenty of Gatorade!
